Rhythm Cares’ Movement and Memory Rhythms program utilizes American popular music rhythms (soul, rhythm & blues, rock, pop, jazz, swing, country, rockabilly) that most seniors are familiar with. America’s contribution to popular music is special. Seniors grew up with remarkable music history. The heart and soul of Movement and Memory Rhythms is for seniors to use drum sticks and reference song ensembles. Song ensembles are breakdowns of rhythm patterns of popular American songs. Musical cultural history is also an essential ingredient. Note: Hands vs. drum sticks can still be used.

Familiarity with songs opens up a cultural history door for rhythm group activities. Senior groups not only use and play rhythms to songs they are familiar with; seniors have an opportunity to share memories about songs and music (such as e.g., I saw Buddy Holly in 1956 in Chicago).

The time has come for senior groups who have been using Healthy Rhythms to make rhythms healthier. For senior groups who have not been using rhythms then your in for a treat that benefits movement and memory.
